Have you ever thought about what you would grab if your house was on fire? My answer is this evening gown. This evening gown was my final project of college (whattttt) and by far my favorite item of clothing I’ve made so far during school. I still can’t believe I’m done college and not going back to school this year. The evening gown was by far the most rewarding garment I’ve made because I had to start and finish the gown at home and I had to get through the sewing battles all on my own. Yes my instructor, shout out to Stephanie, was available to troubleshoot but not at 2 am when the shit was hitting the fan. Usually when it got to that point at 2 am I took it as a sign to go to bed lol. Above are progress pictures taken throughout my journey sewing this dress together. Throughout the process I ran into a few challenges; how am I going to lay out this massive 8 meter circumference skirt I drafted, how am I going to cut spiral steel boning without a cutter and do I have enough lace to achieve the desired look. All the challenges I met head on and solved them by rearranging my living room to give me more floor space, purchased a metal cutter and measured, laid out the lace, measured again, started cutting, got scared, measured yet again and counted my lucky stars that I had enough lace. Thankfully everything worked out perfectly. I definitely will be investing in a big metal chopper if I ever need to cut metal boning again haha oh the things you take for granted that the college provides in the labs. Below are pictures of the paperwork needed for my project which included: a technical drawing, a description and a specification sheet. The tech drawing shows all the technical aspects of the dress; closure, seamlines, boning, topstitching etc and the description is detailed enough that you should be able to sew the garment together with only that information. The spec sheet has all my costs & how long I worked on the dress, 71.5 hours holy, it also shows how much the dress would've costed if I was charging someone. A whopping $1,273.38 Once my gown was completed I couldn't wait to take pictures to send to friends and family so I took some amateur photos in my shower. I thought the white/grey marble made the dress stand out and my bathroom has great lighting. Also, since I was taking pictures to show off my dress and we are in a pandemic it only made sense for me to make a matching mask with left over fabric. Since this evening gown is my pride and joy I wanted to get professional photos taken. The fantastic Victor Kirby was my photographer. Victor was the photographer for Image Analysis & Styling class, we did an editorial shoot, we had a great time working together and he said he'd be happy to work with me again so here we are! While deciding how to style my evening gown I wanted to keep it clean, classic & timeless. Nothing is more timeless and classic than pearls! In the photos I'm wearing: pearl earrings from Honolulu, a pearl necklace from my Nonna, a costume jewelry pearl bracelet and silver rings. I also grabbed my white fur coat to match with the pearls just in case it was cold. The photo shoot took place on a brisk, smoky, September afternoon, the day before my birthday, and we had a great time. Every time Victor showed me some pictures I was in awe of the amazing shots he got. My friend Danielle, an aspiring photographer, was my assistant/fluffer helping with the shoot. I'm ecstatic to finally share these pictures so enjoy! Also please go check out Victor Kirby :) Instagram Website Victor also took some artistic shots of me holding a family heirloom that was my great great grandmothers mirror and china. My Oma gifted me this set for my birthday. It's the most beautiful china set. I also got some fun birthday pictures taken cause why not :)
