New Years Eve outfits are always difficult. Do I go buy a new outfit? Do I rummage through my closet and pull together a new outfit? Or do I say to hell with it and be comfy in my leggings and hoodie? Well this post is to give you inspiration to pull together an outfit with articles of clothing you already own. Who really NEEDS new clothes? I definitely don’t haha but when I do feel the need to buy new clothes I buy used at a consignment store or thrifted from somewhere like Value Village. Any little thing to help the environment and be as ethical and sustainable is my goal. I’m so excited about these pictures! My photographer friend Josiah Somerville did a fantastic job taking these pictures. I’m in love with these outfits, they’re so unique and very me :) All of the garments used in the outfits were bought secondhand at a consignment store, Clothing Bar Consignment, or Value Village. There’s only ONE article of clothing, the blue velvet body con dress, that I bought new at a store that I consider to be fast fashion, Garage. That blue dress is one I’ve had for many years that I love, adore and take great care of so it will last me forever or til I lose interest in it then I’ll donate it to someone else to love, enjoy and wear as much as I have. I believe that yes, sometimes you have to buy new clothes but some people need to learn the importance of maintaining, mending and donating clothes so that the planet doesn’t become engulfed in the fast fashion black hole that is being started. Sparkle, Stripes & FeathersMy first outfit I've got for you guys is super fun, girly, but WARM. I always find when I’m putting together a cute NYE outfit I always want to wear something with spaghetti straps which isn’t very weather appropriate for December Winter in Canada. My solution: wear a turtle neck under your spaghetti strap top or dress and voila! Layering is such a simple and easy way to dress warmer and add more texture and dimension to your outfit. I’d like to call myself the queen of layering since you’ll probably never catch me out of the house without a long sleeve under a tank top or shirt. Layering a long sleeve turtle neck is also a great way to dress something down. As you can see in the outfit above the striped long sleeve quiets the loud sequinned, feathered dress. I’m absolutely in love with this dress, I initially purchased it for my junior winter formal quiet a few years ago and it still fits and I still love it! Honestly if anyone looked in my closet they would be shocked at how many clothes I have and my excuse is, “I’m a fashion student it’s ok,” but in reality I really need to sort through my clothes... New Years Resolution! In all seriousness hanging onto clothes you love and don’t wear normally is always good in the long run because fashion always comes back! Just look at all the outfits being worn at Fashion shows the 90’s are back baby and all those moms that kept their clothes from the 90’s (like my mom hehe) are now fashionable again. Hanging onto clothes is also, in my opinion, more ethically and sustainable because if you already own something why buy new just wear what you have! Velvet FringeMy second outfit is edgy but still sparkly. Since I am the queen of layering this outfit features something layered once again! Am I the only one who finds a dress that they think is so pretty but would look even better as a top? No just me? Well if you ever find yourself in my conundrum have no fear I have found a simple solution! Grab your dress, grab a skirt and BAM a new outfit! For my outfit I had a tight fitting, body con velvet dress so I was able to pop my fringe mini skirt over top no problemo. If you did have a dress that had a more A-line skirt then I would suggest putting a A-line or circle skirt over top. The trick is to layer the same kind of skirt on top of each other; pencil skirt with pencil skirt, A-line with A-line. Now you’ve got a dress that is versatile and can be a skirt or a dress. Would you look at that we have expanded out horizons... in our wardrobes. Jumping back to my comment of fashion always comes back, the black leather jacket I’m wearing is my moms from the 80’s! She’s still looking good: nice and worn where you want and still shiny in all the right places. Ethical, sustainable fashion doesn’t even have to be buying new clothing’s from a consignment store sometimes borrowing clothes from a friend or family member is just as good! (As long as you return the clothing item better then you received it and washed properly!) Plaid n’ KnitMy final outfit for this post has a much more Christmas vibe to it, if you’re still in denial that Christmas is over. I paired this lovely thick, warm knitted sweater with a plaid mini skirt. I personally though that the skirt and sweater were very plain on their own so I accessorized! Chains are so easy to add to an outfit to give just a little but more texture and edge. I’ve got chains layered on my neck (if you thought I was done talking about layering you were wrong!) 3 to be exact all in different lengths to add more glitz and glam. I also took my chunky chain necklace from the first outfit and attached it to my belt so the chain cascaded over my hip adding a little something something. To help accentuate my waist I added a red belt, this belt also matched well with my lipstick, skirt and red boots giving my outfit a unified feel. If someone were to ask me what my favourite garment for the winter is I would say JACKETS! I’m definitely a jacket hoarder, there you have it I’ve admitted it, but when living in Canada you have to have an assortment of outerwear since that’s what ends up covering the lovely outfits we’ve put together. My favourite jacket this year is my brown fluffy coat I found at value village. I love fur coats. I find they’re always so much warmer than all my other coats and more luxurious. Fur coats are perfect for if you’re looking statement piece. ACCESSORIESMy last tip I’ve got for you guys is: don’t forget to accessorize. Accessories always add just that little bit of extra glam to any outfit and always pull the outfit together. In the first outfit I added the chunky chain necklace over the turtleneck since I thought my declotage looked very plain. I also added my chunky charm bracelet that I got in Disney world when I was about seven years old to add more interest & that little bit of colour to my wrist. In the second outfit I also accessorized with a statement star necklace, chain mail earrings and a sparkly top hat. That rule less is more, yah I don’t usually follow it. Rules are meant to be broken, especially fashion rules. A hat or headwear is the perfect accessory if you’re someone who’s not very big on jewellery. You could wear a floppy hat, like in my first outfit, a glittery top hat, like in my second outfit, a few large barrettes, like in my first outfit or even a headband. Headbands, especially puffy structured ones that Blair Waldorf would’ve worn in Gossip Girl, are all the rage in fashion. Nails are also something I consider an accessory. I painted my nails Christmas red, tinsel gold and finished them off with gold studs. Well there you have it, some NYE outfit inspiration.
