"You've won the battle, but I'm about to win the wardrobe." - Cruella De VilIf you can't tell I absolutely LOVE Halloween. I always go all out. When Vic Kirby asked me if I wanted to do another photoshoot I knew I had to get professional photos of my Cruella De Vil costume. Unfortunately I don't have a Dalmatian but the people that live upstairs do and they so graciously let me use him in the photoshoot. Domino the Dalmatian was a fantastic model :) I was so excited to put this costume together once I decided to go through with it at the end of summer. Since I wanted this costume to be as second hand and non fast fashion as possible I had to do a lot of hunting at thrift stores, consignment stores and online. By fluke chance I was in the Sally Ann and found the PERFECT red boots, in mint condition, my size and a decent price; what are the odds?! I then found the robin egg blue ball earrings at value village, score! I also had a black satin dress, that I made, in my closet already and I knew would be a perfect fit for the costume. The red gloves and cigarette holder I couldn't find secondhand anywhere so I did the next best thing and bought them new from a local small Costume Shop in Calgary. Lastly, the white fur coat. That coat was so hard to find, I searched every thrift and consignment store and found nothing. Then I had the great idea of looking on Poshmark where I found this perfect white faux fur coat with a hood! Unfortunately the coat had white lining and Cruella in the original 101 Dalmatians had red lining that was VERY prominent. Hmmm what to do what to do? I purchased the white coat and decided to temporarily, with safety pins (lmao), line the coat with red fabric I purchased from a sale The Costume Collective had. At this sale I had the realization I was missing an accessory... A PURSE! There was no way I was going to find a little white fur purse, so while at The Costume Collective sale I picked up some small fur scraps that were the perfect size for a little bag. I also remembered I had a cute little black rabbit fur keychain at home, that I got in Europe, that would complete the bag and be the cherry on top! Yay! It was all coming together! Once I had all the costume pieces I needed to decide how to change my hair to complete the look. I didn't like the idea of buying a wig that I could only use for this costume so I decided to temporarily color my hair. Before going out and buying white hair spray I tried making my hair white with corn starch and dry shampoo; it looked alright but it disappeared when I touched it and powder flew everywhere when I shook my head haha. So on a trip to Shoppers Drug Mart I saw some white hairspray and got some to try. The hairspray definitely was a brighter white than the dry shampoo so I ended up using the hairspray. Regardless of what I decided to do I knew it was going to be very messy. Beauty is pain and sometimes messy??? lol The night before the photoshoot I knew I was missing some jewelry specifically a ring with a blue stone so I DIYed one with a plain ring I had, a blue bead and some hot glue. Aren't I crafty? haha. I also wore a crystal necklace to make the outfit look even more extravagant and over the top. Especially since in the live action 101 and 102 Dalmatians Cruella De Vil is a fashion designer that of course dresses very over the top.
I had so much fun putting together this look, I hope it gives you some costume or fashion inspiration and brings you joy during this weird Halloween we have this year due to covid. A big thank you for Vic Kirby for taking such lovely photos, be sure to check out his instagram and website, and my upstairs neighbors for letting Domino, the Dalmatian, be a part of the photoshoot. Happy Halloween everyone! xx Sasha
